Beaded Earrings are Rising Fast
Everywhere you look today, you can see the handmade jewelry revolution. Women are making their own necklaces, bracelets and earrings in record numbers. The variety of styles, colors and materials available in bead selections today is astounding. Anyone with an ounce of creativity can make beautiful jewelry easily and affordably. There are just a few things that need to be thought about, first.
Deciding What to Make
Beaded earrings can be made in almost any style or fashion you choose. So many choices requires an astute appraisal of what you’re making and why. It sometimes helps to draw out your design on paper. If you walk into your local craft store without a plan, you’ll end up with a lot of stuff you don’t need, just because you can’t decide between this color and that, or one style of bead over another. Having a plan will save both time and money, and isn’t that the whole point of making your own jewelry?
Now You Have Your Design
You’ll need some basic tools and materials in order to make your earrings. Depending on the style you’ve chosen, you’ll need fish hook wires (also called French wires) or some other kind of earring base to build your design. Eye pins or head pins usually make a good base for the dangly part of the earring. These will have to be attached to your base (or earring post) through the use of specific tools like nose pilers. You’ll also need beads, spacers and other elements for your earrings, depending on the style you’ve come up with. Wire cutters would also be handy to have, in case you need to cut the head pin or eye pin down to size.
Getting Started
Lay out your materials and decide the order of your beads. String the beads onto the head or eye pin, leaving enough room to attach the pin to the post. Pay attention to how your earring looks with the way you’ve strung the beads. If you don’t like it, change it before going any further.
Once you’re satisfied with the order of your beads, it’s time to attach the head or eye pin to the post or wire. To do this, begin by bending the pin with your fingers to a 45° angle. If you are using another kind of post besides a French wire, you’ll need to complete these steps after placing the end of the pin through the post attachment. Once you’ve completed the first earring, repeat the steps for the second. Voila! You’ve got new, low-cost, unique earrings. Congratulations!
